CARBOHYDRATES: Do we need them?

Most people on a weight loss programme or trying to maintain a healthy weight will quickly tell you that they have removed carbohydrates from their diet as it makes them put on a lot of weight. While this might be true, we should also bear in mind that carbohydrates are amongst the components of a balanced meal as they provide us with energy that keeps us going throughout the day.

In order to maintain a healthy weight therefore, we need to eliminate BAD carbs and replace them with GOOD carbs. Bad carbs are highly refined, processed and easily digested and so can contribute to weight gain and some other diseases. They can be found in white bread, white rice, sugary drinks etc.

Good carbs on the other hand are lesser in calorie, deliver fibre in addition to carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. The fibre is essential as it ensures that carbohydrates are slowly absorbed (keeping you full for a long time) without causing spikes in blood sugar level. They can be found in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, brown rice, beans, whole wheat pasta etc.

So it would be great to opt for these good carbs in our meals ( in moderation of course!) than leaving them off entirely .
